Many colleges have just a few weeks left of classes before students go home for the summer. Now is the time to think about and act upon pressing safety issues.

Among the issues will be talk of slips and falls among students and staff while walking to a building, dorm or restaurant on campus.  Furthermore, slips and falls have become such a hot topic that many universities (Purdue, UnionUniversity of West Florida, Princeton, etc.) have started to post signage asking pedestrians to report possible locations for slip and fall injuries.

Our research has shown many universities prefer to pay millions of dollars in construction costs to fix these slip and fall areas in hopes of reducing or preventing avoidable injuries.

But, why pay millions of dollars for construction permits, material, and time spent if there’s a cheaper and easier alternative?

Handi-Ramp, based in Libertyville IL saw a problem and created a solution.  Now sold worldwide, their product named Handi-Treads, are an inexpensive and easy to install solution for high risk slip and fall areas around your campus.

You may have seen, know about, or installed a non slip grit tape or grip paint to prevent such slips and falls; however the cons far outweigh the pros.  Handi-Treads are made from aluminum which is weather and corrosion resistant; grit tape and grip paint are not weather resistant, and although they do not corrode the composition degrades easily.

Handi-Treads can be mounted on your front stairs, and then moved and re-mounted on your rear porch, and moved again to your sidewalk with little effort and does not leave a sticky residue.  Grit tape and grip paint can be moved, but you’ll spend time scraping the remaining residue off the surface.

Handi-Treads are available in seven stock sizes and five finishes with custom sizes available.  Grit tape and grip paint are available to consumers in limited sizes and even more limited colors.  No custom size grit tape is available.

Non slip treads have been purchased and installed by dozens of community colleges and universities for many years, preventing not just the slip and fall but also the resulting injury or even death associated with it.

With campuses across the country thinning for the summer, now is the time to think about keeping students and staff safe year round with Handi-Treads.

As the first day of meteorological spring 2014 falls upon our nation, hundreds of thousands of people are still digging out of several 2013-2014 winter storms including #WinterStormAtlas, #WinterStormBoreas, #WinterStormCleon and #WinterStormDion.

According to The Weather Channel this morning, more cold air will move into the Midwest, East, and parts of the South regions early next week bringing the possibly of more winter storms.

With a much needed thaw covering much of our nation these past couple of weeks, what does this mean for the regions mentioned above? It means any standing water on city sidewalks, driveways and porch decks could freeze, leaving a slippery mess for people.

Did you know slips and falls cause more than 19,000 deaths in the U.S. annually (source Center for Disease Control)?

With Mother Nature’s relentless winter breaking snow records in New York City, frigid below average temperatures in Chicago, and near record breaking numbers for ice covering the great lakes (92%) it’s no wonder millions of Americans are fed up with this weather.

But as I stated earlier, more winter weather could invade our air over the next several days, leaving Americans to fend for both their safety and others against slips and falls when leaving their home.

To prevent this, we at Handi-Ramp have designed a permanent and inexpensive solution for this growing problem. Named Handi-Treads, they are made from aluminum measuring 3.75” wide by 30” long and are designed to be mounted on to any surface aimed at preventing such slips and falls. You may have heard of a non slip grit tape or maybe grip paint, right? Well, our tread would replace those useless products.

Manufactured with our unique raised-button surface, aluminum treads provided unparalleled traction regardless of weather conditions or mounting location. They are available in several varying sizes and colors to meet your needs, and come with a lifetime residential warranty so long as you maintain ownership of the property, and a one year warranty for commercial locations.

What’s more, if you decide a few years down the road that your mounting location was not the best choice, simply remove the tread and place it elsewhere – you won’t need to worry about scraping up dried glue from the faded tape.

We promise you will be satisfied with our product, and if not, feel free to return it for a credit! For more information about our non slip tread or to make a purchase, please call (800) 876-7267 or visit www.handiramp.com

What would you do if your facility fabricated metal parts and the excess metal shavings created a safety hazard on multiple stair ways?

Our customer located in the state of Washington owns a metal fabrication company that makes metallic composite parts for the aerospace industry. They purchased HandiTreads nosings to cover the edge of the stairs leading up to various equipment which is used in the metal fabrication process.

Prior to adding Handitreads the fine metal fibers would affix themselves to the bottom of shoes and be transferred throughout the complex, including stairs. When these workers walked up to a machine platform the metal shavings would pose a slip, trip and fall near these steps.

After adding HandiTreads nosings to the edge of the stairs, the added traction of the non slip surface made for a better grip. Workers were able to go about their workday without worrying about slipping or falling.

HandiTreads work well in any metal fabrication industry, where metal pieces and shavings can lead to a slippery outcome. Any small power or shaving of any kind in an industrial setting or manufacturing facility can pose a safety issue.

HandiTreads come in a variety of colors and in standard widths and lengths. Nosings and treads can be made to fit custom sizes. Nosings protect the edge of the stairs, whereas treads protect the top of the surface that you step on. In this case the customer wanted to protect the edge more than the tread of the stair.

If you work in a metal fabrication facility or any other industrial setting where you work with powder or shavings consider adding HandiTreads as a slip trip fall preventative. Call a HandiTreads expert to order treads for your facility at 800-876-RAMP (7267).

Please leave any comments below about HandiTreads and how you’ve used them in your plant or facility.

What if you were told the number of commercial lawsuit claims has jumped over 50% since 2008, and many of these locations are paying out without a proper investigation?

Sadly, this is true. And it continues to rise.

Many businesses, including retail stores and warehouses are targeted more frequently by a team who target an easy location (slippery floors, unsafe walkways or stairways, etc) and use it to their advantage.

As mentioned above, many companies do not conduct a thorough investigation, but instead pay out the injury claim.

At the present time, there are not many solutions for preventing this ‘slip and fall’ act. Some say installing and maintaining CCTV cameras in hopes of catching the offenders committing this fraudulent act. Others suggest installing signs and other warning for both customers and employees.

But what if there was a cheaper solution; one that blends in with the walking surface and prevents slips and falls at the same time? They are called Handi-Treads and feature a unique raised-button surface that provides additional traction wherever and whenever needed. Manufactured near Chicago IL these non slip treads are perfect to mount onto any surface including wood, concrete, masonry, and even aluminum.

Many of us also know one size does not fit all. That’s why treads are manufactured in 7 different sizes and 5 different finishes for each size. That’s 35 different options!

So the next time you consider ripping up your flooring to prevent such slips and falls, consider an alternate solution with non slip Handi-Treads.

It’s Still Icy Cold in Canada in Spring – Perfect for Non Slip Treads

We are celebrating the 54 degree weather a few days before Easter. Meanwhile in some regions of Canada it is still 9 F. They say that winder lasts until May in Toronto, which is perfect for our product HandiTreads. HandiTreads help beat the ice and cold on stairs by increasing traction.

HandiTreads Provide Traction with a Unique Proprietary Button Surface

Handitreads’ one-of-a-kind raised button surface provides traction on even the most slippery surfaces including stairs, inclines and ramps. Because of the deep grooves provided by these treads they are superior to other non slip tread products due to the longevity and little maintenance needed. They are easy to install and come with a lifetime residential guarantee.

Can I get HandiTreads in Canada?

For the last few months, both Handi-Ramp and Amazon have been in talks to partner and sell our plain aluminum non slip tread (item no. NST-100) from an Amazon fulfillment center in Canada. The Canadian fulfillment center will reach customers not available now and grow awareness about slips and falls and how our non slip tread product can benefit them.

Keep checking back to see the latest update regarding our partnership with Amazon, or call our customer service department at (800)-876-7267.

Change in Jet Stream Results in Bitter Cold, Ice-Filled Cities

With the change in jet stream bringing bitter cold air from the north, many cities are bracing for what comes along with it – ice. Millions of people throughout the Midwest and east coast will more than likely face frozen cars, freeze warnings, and more misery for those people in the New York and surrounding areas after not one but two storms in two weeks.

But there’s another factor many residents may not consider – slipping and falling when walking from their home to the car, or vice versa. Just like a car, the ground will lose heat, and depending on several factors (wind, composition, air temp) could cool the ground very quickly.

When this happens, the ground will show signs, sometimes obvious, of freezing.

Just this week a gentleman in the city of Pittsburgh feared his father could fall down his stairs due to the wintry weather, and contacted our company for the Handi-Treads. It was explained by his son that the house was built in the early 1920’s and has been renovated a few times. The front area, which consists of 8 stairs (the lowest step being concrete) has been prone to deteriorate.

The gentleman was clearly explained the different non slip tread options we have, and what might work best for their situation.

By the end of the conversation, the gentleman had a clear understanding of what he was purchasing and how to properly use them. You could hear the burden in his voice dissipate knowing his father would be safer with our non slip treads.

If you know someone who could benefit from this product, please give Handi-Ramp a call and allow their non slip tread experts to explain how their product can work for you. Please call 800-876-7267 (RAMP), or visit them on the web at www.handiramp.com.

Although slips and falls are more common in the winter because of snow and ice, they are still extremely common no matter what time of year. With this year’s June being so hot, more people have been going to pools, beaches, lakes, etc. to cool off. As we all know by seeing the yellow slippery floor sign on store floors, water can make almost any surface dangerous to walk on. Most people would think Handi- Treads are only necessary in slippery environments caused by some form of snow and ice; however HandiTreads are designed to create unparallel traction in any environment.

Our aluminum treads are designed to work with these elements, which is why Handi-Treads are great to use in an unsafe or slippery environment caused by water. Handi-Treads are not just extremely durable; they will not rust even if they are subject to underwater conditions. Piers, walkways, and stairs can be made safe in minutes with our easy-to-install treads. Handi-Treads can be installed on
any surface including (but not limited to) wood, concrete, masonry, metal, etc. Knowing that situations and environments are different for everyone, we offer treads in a variety of sizes and colors to fit your personal needs.

Unlike grip tape and non slip paint, water and the environment will not reduce the quality of traction over time which makes Handi-Treads a long-term solution that requires basically no maintenance. With the average slip and fall injury producing medical bills in the thousands, taking action to prevent a slip and fall injury before it happens is crucial. The durability and no rust features of our treads make it a perfect solution to preventing slips and falls caused by water and any other element.
