As the first day of meteorological spring 2014 falls upon our nation, hundreds of thousands of people are still digging out of several 2013-2014 winter storms including #WinterStormAtlas, #WinterStormBoreas, #WinterStormCleon and #WinterStormDion.

According to The Weather Channel this morning, more cold air will move into the Midwest, East, and parts of the South regions early next week bringing the possibly of more winter storms.

With a much needed thaw covering much of our nation these past couple of weeks, what does this mean for the regions mentioned above? It means any standing water on city sidewalks, driveways and porch decks could freeze, leaving a slippery mess for people.

Did you know slips and falls cause more than 19,000 deaths in the U.S. annually (source Center for Disease Control)?

With Mother Nature’s relentless winter breaking snow records in New York City, frigid below average temperatures in Chicago, and near record breaking numbers for ice covering the great lakes (92%) it’s no wonder millions of Americans are fed up with this weather.

But as I stated earlier, more winter weather could invade our air over the next several days, leaving Americans to fend for both their safety and others against slips and falls when leaving their home.

To prevent this, we at Handi-Ramp have designed a permanent and inexpensive solution for this growing problem. Named Handi-Treads, they are made from aluminum measuring 3.75” wide by 30” long and are designed to be mounted on to any surface aimed at preventing such slips and falls. You may have heard of a non slip grit tape or maybe grip paint, right? Well, our tread would replace those useless products.

Manufactured with our unique raised-button surface, aluminum treads provided unparalleled traction regardless of weather conditions or mounting location. They are available in several varying sizes and colors to meet your needs, and come with a lifetime residential warranty so long as you maintain ownership of the property, and a one year warranty for commercial locations.

What’s more, if you decide a few years down the road that your mounting location was not the best choice, simply remove the tread and place it elsewhere – you won’t need to worry about scraping up dried glue from the faded tape.

We promise you will be satisfied with our product, and if not, feel free to return it for a credit! For more information about our non slip tread or to make a purchase, please call (800) 876-7267 or visit www.handiramp.com

It’s Still Icy Cold in Canada in Spring – Perfect for Non Slip Treads

We are celebrating the 54 degree weather a few days before Easter. Meanwhile in some regions of Canada it is still 9 F. They say that winder lasts until May in Toronto, which is perfect for our product HandiTreads. HandiTreads help beat the ice and cold on stairs by increasing traction.

HandiTreads Provide Traction with a Unique Proprietary Button Surface

Handitreads’ one-of-a-kind raised button surface provides traction on even the most slippery surfaces including stairs, inclines and ramps. Because of the deep grooves provided by these treads they are superior to other non slip tread products due to the longevity and little maintenance needed. They are easy to install and come with a lifetime residential guarantee.

Can I get HandiTreads in Canada?

For the last few months, both Handi-Ramp and Amazon have been in talks to partner and sell our plain aluminum non slip tread (item no. NST-100) from an Amazon fulfillment center in Canada. When winter arrives, you feel it: a freezing cold, snowy, slushy season. One of the first things many people do is grab that $20 bag of salt at the nearest grocery store.  In any given winter, we go through several bags of the clear pellets in hopes of reducing slips and falls by family members, relatives and friends.  We think nothing of spending $20 once or many times a week on deicers for stairs, walkways and driveways to keep from falling.  Just because we eat salt, does not mean that it is a good thing, in mass quantities, for the environment.

Many times I’m asked the question, “Is salt environmentally friendly?”

The answer is no.  Many salt compounds used for de-icing – vehicles to airplanes – contain large amounts of chemicals that damage plants.  Deicing chemicals build up and prevent nutrients from getting into soil and waterways as they are contaminated by heavy metals.  Excess salt can even give grass the burnt look near the edge of the sidewalk once the snow has melted in summer and spring.

Other kinds of salt include those strewn onto streets by snow removal vehicles.  The salt inside their tanks includes such chemicals like sodium chloride, calcium chloride and potassium chloride. Calcium chloride is notorious for promoting algae in our water ways. It is an undesired side effect, one that most people are unaware of.  These types of salts are also corrosive and are a harmful skin irritant. Furthermore, the colder the temperature is below 32 degrees, the less effective salt is on a roadway.

What do I do instead?  What’s the alternative to salt?

By eliminating salt all together, you will not only help save the environment but save yourself countless money.  The permanent alternative solution to salt is a product patented for slippery conditions cathumb_tread-snow-on-stairslled Handi-Treads®.  These non slip stair treads are specifically designed to be mounted to any wood or concrete surface that requires additional traction to avoid slips and falls.

Salt melts ice but the process is a slow, temporary and costly solution.  Handi-Treads® stair treads provide years of durability and are sold with a lifetime residential warranty, giving you years of avoiding the trip to the store to get the $20 bag of chemical deicers and potentially a trip to the hospital from slipping on ice!

Change in Jet Stream Results in Bitter Cold, Ice-Filled Cities

With the change in jet stream bringing bitter cold air from the north, many cities are bracing for what comes along with it – ice. Millions of people throughout the Midwest and east coast will more than likely face frozen cars, freeze warnings, and more misery for those people in the New York and surrounding areas after not one but two storms in two weeks.

But there’s another factor many residents may not consider – slipping and falling when walking from their home to the car, or vice versa. Just like a car, the ground will lose heat, and depending on several factors (wind, composition, air temp) could cool the ground very quickly.

When this happens, the ground will show signs, sometimes obvious, of freezing.

Just this week a gentleman in the city of Pittsburgh feared his father could fall down his stairs due to the wintry weather, and contacted our company for the Handi-Treads. It was explained by his son that the house was built in the early 1920’s and has been renovated a few times. The front area, which consists of 8 stairs (the lowest step being concrete) has been prone to deteriorate.

The gentleman was clearly explained the different non slip tread options we have, and what might work best for their situation.

By the end of the conversation, the gentleman had a clear understanding of what he was purchasing and how to properly use them. You could hear the burden in his voice dissipate knowing his father would be safer with our non slip treads.

If you know someone who could benefit from this product, please give Handi-Ramp a call and allow their non slip tread experts to explain how their product can work for you. Please call 800-876-7267 (RAMP), or visit them on the web at www.handiramp.com.

With the wintry season on the horizon, it’s time again to think about keeping the family safe from injuries.  With the combined rising costs of, it may be time to think outside the box.

Fortunately, there is a solution already in play for homeowners concerned about safety and preventable bumps and bruises.

Non slip treads are what they are call the solution to preventing slips, trips, and falls.  Manufactured by Handi-Ramp in Libertyville IL, a suburb of Chicago, these treads are designed to be mounted on any surface leading to the front door, back porch, or other entrances.

According to a statement by Handi-Ramp, the treads, which are made from 100% aluminum, will never rust or corrode when subjected to the harshest weather, should reduce or eliminate your need for salting.  Unlike non slip grit tape and grip paint, treads will not need to be replaced every couple months due to wear and tear.  It may also be good to point out that treads feature a lifetime residential warranty for those locations with heavy foot traffic.

One of the many statistics cites that slip and falls account for over 8 million hospital emergency room visits each year, representing the leading cause of visits (21.3%), and of those 8 million, 22% of slip/fall incidents resulted in more than 31 days away from work.

What is the most serious injury after a fall?  Hip fractures.  They account for 5% of the people who experience a slip and fall.  But the home is not the only place where people fall.  It happens in nursing homes too.  Hip fractures account for 40% of the number of nursing home admissions and are the sixth leading cause of death among people aged 70 years or older.

Falls can be prevented, and it does not have to cost an arm and a leg to do so.

Handi-Ramp makes sure of that.

Months of research and product development went into the design and structure of each style of treads.  Currently, they stock daily seven different options to choose from.

But it does not stop there.  Handi-Ramp also manufactures treads to fit every imaginable, situation.  Just recently an installation for the DuPage County Forest Preserve was completed.  The project entailed 492 custom treads, each 114” long, 3.75” wide.  Pictures can be seen on their Facebook page (link here).

The number of falls each winter can be reduced or prevented with Handi-Ramps products.  Call 800-876-7267 to see if treads can help you, or visit www.handiramp.com
